A good MMO all around, action cancelling could come in at an earlier level, but as it stands a fun game to trash a few hours

Without a doubt, this is one of the most rewarding open world survival games on steam. While it is not perfect, it has a couple interesting quirks that make surviving on the preset difficulties tough at times, this game presents a stark and lonely atmosphere that manifests as a survival element in and of itsself.

The need to manage hydration and calories on top of sleep can cripple you. the need to worry about temperature can limit travel, as even with the best crafted gear you can still freeze to death on the more daunting maps, especially when the world starts getting colder.

Nights are not just dark, they are cripplingly black and exponentially more dangerous than the day, forcing you to rely on sound as the only means of knowing predators are coming for you. Light sources help only so long as you can maintain and fuel them. and when you finally realize that you are truly lost in an unfamiliar region the only thing that you can do is hunker down, build a fire (if you were smart enough to bring the materials and the wind doesnt stop you dead) and wait patiently for daylight, as even sleeping outside some form of shelter will likely end in you being attacked, leaving you at deaths door.

there is a secondary reward to playing as well, as when you begin to master the elements and your own fragile health, you can begin to explore, finding the remnants of those who lost the fight. without revealing to much, survival even has a form of story by searching for the memories of those left behind.

Finding a cache of much needed supplies, or the rare and super useful expedition gear leaves you sighing thankfully at the chance to stave off death another night. and when you finally master the art of bow hunting, tracking your prey by the blood on the ground and then harvesting the precious resources it leaves behind, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Even coming across the ravaged carcass of a deer will make you feel lucky, so long as you are ready to take a chance on food poisoning.

the game forces you to make tough decisions, especially if you are deperate. Is that dusty beef jerky left on the seat of a car worth eating if you are hungry? do you have the time and heat to boil enough water to slake your parched throat? have you slept long enough to make it up that steep incline or climb that rope without falling and possibly injuring yourself just so you can get to that cabin you saw in the distance? is firing your gun at a wolf worth the risk of missing and being mauled? is the ice thick enough to walk across?

If you are looking for a deep and rewarding survival experience that tests patience and your ability to make sound decisions, then by all means. give this game a shot, you will not be disappointed.

ALSO! the recent rewrite of the episodic story is amazing. while Wintermute started as a good foray into storytelling in this bleak little world, the Redux has added some true polish and shows just how much the creator cares for this masterpiece. You will find yourself hoping beyond actual hope that Mackenzie survives long enough to find what he is searching for.
