Pretty linear and there's not much space to explore besides the main path but at least for ruins of sky high towers, you can't fall off anywhere so it's a safe storybook to walk through. Recommended if you have time to kill with a free game trying to tell a story.

Calling these ruins "magnificent" is a bit of a stretch though.

It may be plagued by excessive DLC, yes. The engine may have been inappropriate from the start so newer content may never see any real great technical innovations, okay. The developer might be (Or at least have been before 2020...) bad with investments and milking this games community to barely stay alive, sure.

But it's still a fun game that simulates all those fantasies of doing a great robbery with your friends and survive on a heist mission just like in the movies. The characters are memed beyond sanity by the fans, the lore deep enough for hours on its own. It may not be the best game in the world but it does what it's trying to do impressively well.

A videogame adaptation of good quality able to capture the game. Had "Papers, Please" been an AAA title, this could have been a promo.

Imagine you find a cache of hallucinogens and consume your find in the mirror maze of a geometrical forms theme park. Confused by your now enhanced surroundings you fall asleep and dream of an island small enough to run across in a few minutes, big enough to have you find a new detail every day you spend on it. As you start uncovering the mysteries of the place, you can feel your bains neural network forming new connections as you solve the puzzles all over the place. When you feel the dream ending after days of exploration you wake up in a heap of cereal boxes with all the mazes on their backs solved, you even found multiple solutions for some and others taped together because their individual mazes formed one big solvable one. This is The Witness.

I highly recommend to try to 100% the gameplay (Numbers: 523+135+6) by solving everything instead of rushing to unlock the finale and immediately ending the game with it.

It's one of those experiences you wish you could forget just so you could play it for the first time again.

An example of how to connect gameplay with minimalistic but living visuals and music. You hear the soundtrack somewhere - or happen to intentionally listen to it because it's great - and instantly want to play a few rounds. A game you can come back to and play for five minutes or half an hour and it's just fun. Except for the short period when you lose and have to restart. But the longer period you don't lose easily makes up for that.

GAME OVER BEGIN

Now with a modernized codebase in the Neo update!

"That hill didn't look like the developer wanted me to go there but I managed to climb it anyways!" - Does that sound like you?

"I want to get on top of this, let's see... I can reach this place from here and can barely get there by jumping on top of this object." - Do you enjoy using your movement abilities to their maximum potential?

Is using everything the game engine and its understanding of physics gives you to find ultimate freedom in where to go and how fast to do that your thing? Was rocketjumping your primary way of reaching the floor above before stairs were invented?

Do you wish someone would take away all these people shooting each other and even you when you're not even attacking them because you just want to check that corner of the map up there?

Well, why not do the opposite and take away all the peaceful jumpy parts and put it into its own game. Welcome to KZmod aka Kreedz Climbing.

Played with hints turned off.
Atmosphere just weird enough to sometimes feel a little spooky, puzzles that make you feel like having accomplished something every time two things click into alignment, a difficulty level of only getting stuck when you haven't inspected what's in front of you properly, this game sets a high Standard for virtual puzzle boxes.

How much gameplay can you put into blocky low poly environments, can you encourage exploring them? How much story can a minimalistic game about killing red dudes tell, how deep can the lore be?

I DO NOT want to SAY TOO MUCH so without REVEALing THE NATURE OF THE SYSTEM, let me just say IT'S THE MOST INNOVATIVE SHOOTER I'VE PLAYED IN YEARS.

See you on #hacking some day!

It's a Student Project and you notice that lack of polish every once in a while. It's not gamebreaking though and only annoys you if you let it annoy you. Portal was obviously one of the main inspirations and the game doesn't try to hide that. The gameplay mechanics aren't revolutionary but it still feels like its own idea. Don't let it fool you that this game is free, it's easily worth a buck or two. Definitely give it a try if you're into first person puzzling in hazardous environments and want to kill about an hour of your time.
