Save yourself while you still can. Dota can definitely ruin your life. My 9k+ hours can attest to that.

If you are reading this and are considering to play dota, first ask yourself; do you have a full 5 stack to play/ learn with? If the answer is no, I'm going to just straight up tell you to look elsewhere. Dota is a very mentally taxing game. Read many other reviews to see complaints about bad teammates who flame/throw/ruin etc. If you value your sanity, don't bother.

Dota is one of those games that really can only be recommended in certain scenarios.

It's hard to recommend this game to a beginner for a multitude of reasons:

1) Steep and time consuming learning curve: Over 100 heroes to choose from. Each with their own set of abilities. Items and item purchasing decisions. Assuming you play a bot match to familiarize yourself with a hero's skillset which takes around 30 mins, you're looking at 50-100 hours just to learn what each heroes does. This is a huge time sink that frankly not many will want to invest into.

2) Lets say people clear step 1) and are ready to play games. Be prepared to be flamed a lot. Smurfs will be stomping games. People will flame. Hard. I'd recommend you to play this game exclusively as a 5 stack. Don't bother with anything less. It's always a dice roll for the random people you get in your pub. They may or may not cooperate. They may flame. [Let's be honest. Chances are they ARE going to flame.] They may have their feelings/Ego hurt and decide to ruin the game for everyone else on the team and you'll be forced to suffer until the game ends because there's no option to surrender/quit without being penalized.

Assuming you're determined and can overcome the downsides in 1) and 2), Dota is amazing. There's a reason people keep coming back to it.

The constant bi-yearly updates ensures the game stays fresh.
Competitive dota is fun to watch. [Assuming you know dota.]
The game is very deep with so many possible match ups that no two feel games will feel the same.
There's a library of custom games to play if you don't feel like playing basic dota.
The game has absolutely no pay2win features. No nonsense about unlocking heroes either. You have access to all the heroes that a veteran player also has.
