At first it was just a well executed game, whose formula wasn't anything new, but was very well executed and partnered with an excellent sense of emergent humor.

Then it went places I don't think anybody was ready for. Swarms of people all being conditioned to work towards a community whole in an honestly impressive demonstration of uncoordinated solidarity. Bots, Bugs, didn't matter ♥♥♥♥ got done, which made for an amazing community.

And when something came along to threaten that community it did what it had been conditioned to do and acted in unison to counter the threat. So now we've stuck it to the bugs, battled the bots, and even cast our vote against corporate overreach and made a publisher blink.

Damn I love being a Helldiver. Its not just the solid shooter action that's just -fun- to play, it's the community that makes this magical.

I really enjoy this game.

No, I actually do. The fast paced gameplay is everything I had wanted in a Doom title. There were some minor gripes, sure, but nothing deal breaking, I felt this was a $60 well spent. It's been fun loading it up to romp around in the little spare time work is letting me get away with, and i've been slowly chipping away at the campaign. Good times.

Whelp, it was fun while it lasted. I won't be finishing it after this last update.

To explain why, the update itself (which cannot be prevented; Doom Eternal requires you to update to play) contains Denuvo Anti-Cheat, and by the developers own admission is a kernal level driver that has to be uninstalled (read: purged from your system like the infection it is) individually.

Now, I'm not as rabidly anti anti-cheat as some. But Doom Eternal has been out there for a little while now, and a lot of people have bought and played it. And nowhere did it say that they were buying a product that would saddle them with a program that would have low-key access to everything in their system (making a gaping open door for malware if anybody cracks denuvo) that has a reputation for ruining gameplay experience by varying means, not least of which is crushing your CPU and SSD/HDD and demolishing a system's performance.

So what the actual ♥♥♥♥, man. I did not pay knowing this would come up. Knowing the game would come packaged with this ahead of time would have made all the difference; consumers could choose to buy or not buy with an informed decision.

This?

This just feels extremely dishonest. It's a shady call that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

So until they get rid of it, I guess I won't be finishing Doom Eternal. Which is a real shame, because it was fun while it lasted.
