I should stop playing this before I break something.

Edit: Okay, time for an actual review. It's also my first, so excuse me if it's a little useless.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is built on a fairly simple concept: it's a turn based dungeon crawler, except each turn is restricted to the beat of the music, so if you don't think quickly enough or mistime your move, you miss your turn (and your gold multiplier, which can be crippling with certain items).

As you might expect, enemies become tougher as you move through each stage of the game, with their movements becoming more complex as well. You can find new tools and weapons as you progress to give yourself a better chance, but ultimately, you have to learn how each enemy behaves to succeed.

There are a total of ten playable characters, two of which are unlocked from the start (one using the default gameplay and the other allowing you to move off the beat, effectively removing the time pressure). The unlockable characters offer more challenging scenarios such as:
  • Instant gameover if you touch any gold dropped by defeated monsters
  • Instant gameover (yet again) if you miss a single beat or take a single hit
  • Elapsing turns two times faster than usual
  • A ludicrous horror that combines everything above
  • Not being able to deal any damage, and instead having to dodge enemies while going for the exit

There's plenty of replay value thanks to the different characters, and the game also generates daily challenges similar to those from Spelunky: everyone gets one try at the same dungeon each day, and your final score is uploaded to the leaderboard for that day only.

You can import your own soundtracks and play along to them, provided you have them stored locally. There's also modding support, which is always nice.
