tl;dr to the latest controversy: The game was going to become unavailable in over 100 countries due to an upcoming change from the publisher (not the developer), so the Steam reviews got bombed in protest. The upcoming change got cancelled, so we're all happy again. People were only upset because they'd lose access to the game, not because the game is bad.

As for an actual review, the game is really solid third-person co-op shooter. It supports up to 4 players, but solo play is possible for the most part. Microtransactions do exist within the game, but they are not necessary to obtain anything, as the premium currency can be found in missions for free. The gameplay itself is rather unique, as each player can generally bring 4 "Stratagems" to a mission, which have effects ranging from summoning an airstrike, building a sentry gun, or ordering a bigger gun from sci-fi Amazon. This results in plenty of cinematic moments occurring mid-game, as a giant bug might approach to stomp on you just in time for a miniature nuclear bomb to land on it, sending you flying into the distance while you appreciate the glowing mushroom cloud where your enemy once stood. Then, get up from the cold dirt, inject yourself with some stims, and get back into the fight, as you'll likely see something similar to this occur 2-20 more times this game depending on difficulty and squad size.

The only Cons I could easily point out at this time are the lack of Primary/Secondary weapon diversity. Granted, there's a decent amount of weapons in the game currently, with more on the way. However, there are some loadouts that you can have that leave you with no feasible way to kill certain enemies, and certain weapons that are strictly better than others. I am generally opposed to nerfing weapons though. I would just like to spawn fresh out the pod with nothing but a default liberator to my name and not feel helpless against a Bile Titan.

As it came out everyone loved this game, and now there are mixed reviews. I have a feeling everyone is just upset about Turtle Rock Studios patching everything later than it should be. This game is really good, and I hope that it isn't sweapt away due to poor maintenance. Even in its current state though, its a must have should it ever go on sale. For $60 though, not sure, but I got my money's worth.
