For a new comer to the Total War Series, you are better off going for one of the older titles. Rome 2 is one of those cases where it's 1 step forward and 2 steps back. While there are many nifty features, and takes place during ancient times, set backs such as a clunkier user interface, lack of personal family tree, and the removal of several co-op multiplayer features such as changing the settings to your co-op save file before the game starts, being able to build and recruit units during your partners turn, etc... Some civilizations feel like copies of the other, and some other civilizations don't have enough unit diversity and development to make the game interesting in the long run. Regardless, this is a cautious buy, unless you love warfare in Mediterranean/Western/Eastern Europe theatre.
