I tried playing this as a kid and always failed. Now I can really appreciate it a lot more and thanks to watching a lot of GamerZakh who has played all of it I actually understand how to build a city and it's great fun. My only complain about this game would be the terrible military mechanics. But it's not really a military oriented game.

9.5/10

This is one of the most frustrating, most fun and most seat grabbing game I've played for some time. It's incredibly frustrating and amazing at the same time, which is why it's weird you keep coming back to it.

I have played this game again, and I gotta say, they did a great job with the updates! Even if they cost you, I LOVE how much the DLC's added to the base game and it's actually FUN now. Especially with all the luxury stuff.

My only problem is that the game needs a ruler or some kind of grid system to arrange things. It's very hard to make anything symmetrical.

Other than, 9/10

I used to play this game a LOT as a little kid. Has the charm of the old Settlers games and that 90s charm with very nice art style and simplicity.

The game has a very detailed combat/unit system for it's time and even for today you get a lot of choices. Miltia, pikeman, axeman, bowman, knight, scout and some more unit types you can all train and eventually deploy on the battlefield in various formations (which often decides if you win or lose). And you cannot just make units endlessly either: this was the first game where soliders had to be fed directly, as they get hungry from time to time. In fact if you fail to feed them in time they simply die! How realistic!

By modern standards there is not a lot of variety of buildings and they don't get upgraded nor visually neither functionally: what you see is what you get, but again it has that Settlers charm where you see your fellow baker just chillng in the window when he has no job to do!

The game is full isometric and buildings cannot be turned, the limitation of the engine itself. However buildings are really a secondary part of the game and most of the time you're gonna think about building up the military and various tactics to attack.

The interface and controls has not aged well, I had trouble setting up the units due to the lack of precise mouse controls, and you often misclick. There is an option where you can decide where and in what direction your units would deploy to and this can be crucial in a battle.

All in all a charming, rather slow paced game, I give it a 7/10. With some small changes and a little modernisation this could be an excellent medieval city builder game even by modern standards. Just keep the 2d graphics!

This game is legendary, and for a good reason. I missed it when it originally came out and played it first 6 or 7 years ago. Despite numerous efforts to bring stealth back into games they just can't get it right. This game has it all and some more, and it's really one of a kind. This game is extremely immersive, unique and something you'll remember if you played it once. Much like many classics from the same age you just keep coming back to play it again. I bought this on Steam despite having the original CD because it's easier to play it this way, and with the new updated texture packs and patches it actually looks pretty nice too.
