DF is here!!! If you want to have "fun" and see how a group of ragtag dwarfs try to survive and create a Mountainhome of their own, pick this up. "Fun" is mandatory. You will encounter it at every turn and witness an emergent world you can shape.

Only have 69 hours so far, but many hundreds of hours have been poured into the classic mode and this is truly just an evolution of the classic game that's inspired and shaped so many others.

NOTE: "Fun" is a term from the DF community covering all of the intricate, interesting, and sometimes actually fun ways that a fortress can fall apart. I cannot recommend this game enough for those who enjoy sims and don't need a win condition to enjoy a game. If, on the other hand, you need to feel like you've completed the game in order to enjoy it... maybe pass on this one unless you'd like to support an indie developer who has been working on their passion project for decades.

Wow... just wow. This is a fantastic game in its own right, and it's not even fully fleshed out with content yet. If the bones of it are kept and continued content and slight tweaks are made, this is going to be one of my favorite games of all time.

This game ranks up with Factorio for me, and feels like what I wanted Banished to be. If you want a fun sim with nigh infinite possibilities due to the differing maps and especially the verticality of it all, get this game.

Yes, this is an early access review so there is a slight negative to how it is currently: it's fully solvable. Just like in Factorio and Banished, you can set up production chains and figure out how the game operates to the point where it's no longer difficult to keep your colony alive and thriving. The early days of a colony can be spotty, but there aren't killer scenarios where you messed up one thing and you will lose no matter what. For example, I've had a colony go from 36 pop down to 3 (2 children, 1 adult) and after fixing the issue of slightly less water storage than needed, the colony has come fully back and hasn't had a single issue since. A bit of variability in potential disasters, such as fire hazards (which would be fun to put out using a citywide flooding mechanism), would make this game challenging to the point where I wouldn't be able to put it down.

Aside from that gripe, and really it's a small one, this is turning into one of my favorite games!

Do you want to challenge your mind while under the constant threat of being overrun or running out of resources? Do you want to sink deep into a game for hours with no real feeling of time passing? Do you want to feel a grand sense of accomplishment when you redesign an old way of doing things and create a shiny new and efficient way? Do you want to do all of this with friends by using one of the most absurdly efficient server applications?

Play Factorio.
