This is the first review I've ever written, and I really wanted to write one for this game.

It is without a doubt the zombie game I have been waiting for ever since I started getting into the genre. I have played Dead Rising, Dead Island, Day Z, and of course watched lots of zombie films just to fill the void. But there always felt like something was missing. Dead Island came close to what I was truly after, but it quickly turned into a series of long-winded fetch quests and never felt as though there was that underlying fear or tension at any point. It was just a mindless hack and slash after a while.

Fast forward to Dying Light. I don't know why, but I just wasn't interested when it first came out. I played an early demo at a games convention and it didn't really do much for me. No idea why, perhaps it was the short time we were allowed to play. I had the game on my wishlist for a while and it came on sale not long ago, so I thought why not. It was one of the best decisions for a game purchase I have ever made.

You start off knowing very little, and are plunged right into it (I recommend not reading or watching anything about this game as much as possible). You feel like a minor character, and that there is a whole world going on without you, which is refreshing. You are given some basic tips about movement and such, nothing too intrusive. Then it's kind of... go do what you want! There is little to no hand holding in DL. Techland have really nailed the feeling of being alone, and combined with the tension you are always on edge, in a good way.

Without ruining anything, there are some truly terrifying moments in the game. For example the first night you have to run away from one of the night time zombies, you will probably ♥♥♥♥ yourself. Running away while hearing their breath behind you was one of the most intense experiences in a game I have ever had. Bearing in mind you are still relatively unfamiliar with everything at this point, it was amazing. During the day you can generally navigate safely through the dumb shuffling zombies, even though there are some excellent moments of being overwhelmed by a horde. But as you may know, night time in the game is a very different experience. VERY different. If you are a horror fan you won't be disappointed.

The locations are very well done, the map size is perfect, and the characters are believable. If you love zombie games, you will absolutely LOVE Dying Light.

Pros:

+ A tense, high action FPS
+ Excellent story, voice acting and character animation
+ Very good and imaginative level design
+ Beautiful graphics and satisfying gore
+ Plenty of game hours for your money
+ LOADS of side quests and extra things to do
+ Not a sloppy console port
+ The zombie game you've been waiting for

Cons:

- Some missions can get a bit repetitive, but they're optional
- No quicksave (could be seen as a pro for some depending on your preference)
- You'll probably need to change your underwear more frequently
