Early Access Review
I have been playing Roguelikes since the early 90s (nethack on a Vax terminal), and this is easily the most difficult and unrewarding game I've ever played. Fix the balance. I should be able to walk from the first town to the first dungeon and not die 10 times in a row (and this is post balance patch!!!!). I will be shelving this until the dev's figure out that difficulty should ramp, not be a wall.

In 1984, I was 12 years old. I was flipping through my new copy of Computer Gaming World, when I ran across a full page ad for Bard’s Tale, months before it’s release. I took the money I had saved mowing lawns and working at my Dad’s business, and had my mom send a check to buy the game. It was, in fact, the first game I ever preordered.

I spent months in the world of Skara Brae. I would sit in my room, on my Commodore 64, and explore what was one of the best RPGs of it’s time. I eventually bought the hint book, working my way through the last dungeon with it’s teleporters and traps.

At this point, that has been over 35 years ago, I still occasionally hear the right song on the radio, and get pulled back to that time, sitting in my room and playing Bard’s Tale, more than any other game I’ve ever played.

This game, is no Bard’s Tale. The world building is good, possibly even great later on, but the lack of character customization, and the horrible combat ruins it. Where is my Dwarven Monk, My half-elven archmage? Whoever came up with the combat system should be ashamed of themselves.

Wasteland 2 was a hit because of Bethesda’s simplification of the fallout role playing experience, and InXile bringing that role playing back into a post-apocalyptic world. Why did they think they needed to take Bard’s Tale in the opposite direction?

In the end I will play through Bard’s Tale 4, maybe even finish it, but the soul of Bard’s Tale is not here.
