Let me be clear, don't get your panties twisted... I have enjoyed this game, been enjoying it since early in its Early Access. Many of the fundamental elements to this game are done in such a way that you get all the fun you had in Diablo 2. I however have complaints for the title.

Bad

Hidden secrets can be extremely obvious, a secret is not a secret if it is jumping up and down screaming for you to come to it. It's just lazy

Things block your vision a lot.

Loot drops through walls, it also drops on floors above you, and you can grab it through walls.

Quest rewards can be literally useless and crafted items can be beyond your level when it would be easy to take into account what a player's stats are and generate relatively useful items, or at least ones that are the right level.

Worst of all for my complaints is new characters not being added to the list of characters right away. Make one and you have to go to the Options menu and then exit it for the list to refresh. How hard would it be to refresh the list after the new character was made? Can't be that hard.

Enemy AI is extremely simplistic, you can exploit their stupidity easily to force them into killing grounds that any decent AI would adapt to and avoid - they have only one way to handle situations, "attack."

The entire game treats you like you are in multiplayer. Whereas most good single player experiences let you save progress when you stop playing, Grim Dawn will have you start an entirely new instance if you resume playing later. This means if you have to spend an hour to get to a boss but don't have the time to finish the dungeon run you are stuck either leaving the game running until you come back to it or starting the entire hour long push through the dungeon over again, hope you have enough time the second go.

And there is the problem of economy, you get next to no money for selling anything and buying anything (including health potions) can become painfully expensive early on.

It lets you make all kinds of characters: tank, glass cannon, pet master, trap layer... But if you encounter a boss alone it is always a case of dancing around your foe while you heal. Boss' powers aside those fights almost all end up with you running in a circle at one point or another.

And lastly, the map is only half-useful. It does not show everything, not even everything you find, and you cannot put on notes to mark things you have seen for later use.

Good

There are options for the colour blind.

Full exploration of maps is rewarded.

Sets, sounds, and textures are all cohesive and enjoyable, they make for a very Diablo 2-esque vibe of dark and fearful, almost sorrowful at times.

The setting is gritty and dark, you get the sense of the horrors both human and otherworldly.

Mixed

There is a double edged knife in the component and augmentation system, which is used to improve your gear - you have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bajillion options. It can become rather difficult to figure out exactly what you should be aiming for at times with the system because of that vast array of potential tweaks to your items.

Gear too is interesting and flawed, but drops are almost all useless. I don't mean some, I don't mean a few... I mean a vast majority of drops are entirely useless. The quality system means you will only ever use normal items during your first thirty minutes with a character, and from then on will only use Magic items. The variety for Magic, Epic and other loot is great though, if you want to specialize into a specific type of damag you can do so with the help of the right gear, and finding some to match your build is not too difficult.

Stats, oh Lord the stats - you have huge variety in damage types, resistances, and effects. It can seem overwhelming trying to figure out what is going on.

The map is designed... it is not a random or procedurally generated one. It has elements which change between sessions, but these are largely pointless and do nothing to enhance the playthrough.

Sum it up

To anyone who was looking for a Torchlight-type game, this is your jam right here. Not so polished as some, but very enjoyable for fans of the genre in spite of my gripes. For more casual gamers the numbers will be daunting and the flaws will be maddening. For those thinking I should have taken my complaints to their forums, I did, and I was quickly told all my complaints were wrong.

@pykachi or whatever pokemon you are. Those of us who are mentally healthy and not deranged snowflakes don't get triggered by people's views(especially on a stupid video game). We even enjoy seeing other viewpoints sometimes. That's why we leave comments open. Too bad it also allows kids like you to pollute the discussion with tarded nonsense.

lol never go to a game's own communities(forum, subreddit etc.) to complain about that game. It should be obvious that people who regularly spend their precious time in a
video game's forum are cultist level fanatics of that game. You'll interact with those fanatics mostly since normal people just ask their questions/make their topics and never come back to the forum.

I don't really understand a person's need to open comments on reviews. I've stopped doing it because in reality it's there for people to make slight opinions on your view point of the game you're reviewing from a more experienced player in hopes to change the review to positive.

Now it's just a place where we can shit on you for being an absolute nick picky clown with no real grasp for fun in any game you play unless it 100% suits every need you ask for.

yes, one form of currency is iron in its literal sense, but really iron is just a material like anything else because it's more important for crafting than it is for actually purchasing anything(except maybe quartermaster items). the real currency is components because of the way GD's economy works. there's a huge player driven market in trading and it always revolves in trading piece for piece or piece for x amount of components. Never iron. Iron is so easily made, most don't care for it, and it really doesn't do anything for you late game.

Iron, the currency is iron.

Drops : drops aren't half as useless as you say. Vendor trash exists because you're meant to grab it all so that you can amass silver for component crafting as well as amass rares you don't use for dismantling to acquire rare/very rare component parts.

Also, you said certain aspects of design in the maps do nothing to enhance the playthrough. That couldn't be further from the truth. Many interactions and map functions actually change between difficulties, and some interactions have a major affect later on in the game when it comes to possible items/rewards/etc.

You probably got told your complaints were wrong because, unfortunately, they are.

Couldn't disagree with a review more.

Hidden areas: The Hidden Path, Temple of the Three, Gazer Man, Obsidian Throne, and many more. This game has so many hidden areas and quests that aren't available unless you actually read lore entries. They're not highlighted, they don't "jump up and down at you" as you claim, and a lot of them require some serious sleuthing, assuming you don't google a strategy guide or walkthrough.

Crafting : Crafting is not meant to be where you get your gear, unless it's for double rares (empowered) which are used to farm for legendaries, or for your relics. You are supposed to be using gear that you augment yourself from world drops. Crafting is primarily for components(your 'currency' in Grim Dawn) which you use to upgrade gear and relics, as well as for making consumables for Elite and Ultimate difficulties.

Just wanted to say that the "secrets" in this game, are not the blue highlighted walls that you smash to find hidden rooms.

The real secrets are the areas off the map, that don't show up when you traverse them.

I'm about halfway through the game currently, and haven't encountered a single bug or crash either, fingers crossed.
