The last review I've done of this game is outdated for years, yet the game changed so little on the bigger picture it's a disgrace to say that, but it's not worth playing. Not anymore. The population counts have been getting lower and lower, yet no one at DayBreak seems to care. Also note this isn't my real hour count, it's probably around 1k hours now.

- patches come at a very slow pace, expect not to see one after months of waiting. "You want a patch ? Oh look, another weapon skins bundle !"
- some weapons have been either underpowered or overpowered since day 1, yet never changed (TRAP & directive weapons being garbage for example, fury on invisible flashes completely broken, as well as Air to Ground weapons).
- the population counts getting lower and lower means you're going to see EXACTLY the same people playing from now on, and they'll often be the ones who sunk thoussands of hours in the game, so expect them to beat you everytime if you're not good at FPS'. Also, the autralian server is literally dead, with a peak of 500 players accross two continents, which is low, very low, while Connery, an US server, is probably going to get merged soon enough due to lower and lower pop counts aswell.
- Despite its improvements, the new player experience will remain terrible : if you're an experienced FPS player, it's gonna be rough. If you're completely new to FPS genre, you're going to be eaten alive. Also there's no way for a new player to know exactly what attachments does what, since most of the stats are on the wikis & stuff.
- to get anything done in this game, you need a team. And it's either going to be completely moronic, or you're simply going to be outnumbered 4 to 1 on a base worth defending, while your faction has the biggest pop on the continent, fighting another base with 100+ players against 12 or something.
- 4 years, and the lore is still lackluster & almost absent from the game itself, even better, a lot of weapons are not from the factions, and the factions literally have 2 freaking vehicles for them : a heavy tank and an aircraft; while you have 8 other vehicles who look almost exactly the same, have exactly the same weapons accross all the 3 factions.
- No viable anticheat, there're cheaters who're going through the walls, the ground, who're spinbotting with LMGs in the sky yet still playing, I'm talking about more than 100 hours in game without getting banned, this is just sad.
- 4 years latter, lags and optimization are still garbage on battles with more than 100 people in.

So, let me ask you one question, is it worth for a new player to play planetside ?

I'd have answered yes in 2013, but in 2016 ? Unless you REALLY want to get into the bits of big fights left (which are going to disappear soon enough), be prepared to face huge frustration moments. Despite devs' recent progress for new players, it's already too late, since the new players don't stick around either way, nor even try the game. Only a relaunch could save its game after getting all the bugs and numerous cheesy weapons balanced.
