steam os install (cannot start steam)

During the install it says at point 7 to log in to the gnome session with steam/steam and then run steam and accept the EULA.

problem is when i select steam from the programs or the return to steam icon on the desktop nothing happens, it seems i cannot start steam in steamOS, does anybody know how to fix this?

and fry i am starting the gnome session not the x default or what's it called like i did previously... :P

I wasn't sure what to do at this point, but I just selected gnome from the dropdown list, then used "steam" as both the username and password.

I didn't even try to use the steam program at this point, I just continued to do the desktop/desktop login and run the post install scripts, then after a bit of trouble rebooting, it booted straight into big picture mode

Edit: Before it booted into big picture mode, it downloaded about 200mb of files. My best guess id you're trying to run an incomplete installation and it doesn't actually have steam fully installed. When it's properly installed, it will boot into steam big picture rather than debian's login page.

And now it is working fine? I did it this way some hours ago, and after some time it runs into a black screen... the other consoles are available... maybe i have to try again... thanks for reply.

Open a terminal and run steam, that should do it. This is mentioned in the faq, the first time you launch it should be done via terminal.

Did you run the post install customisation command from terminal? The only time I ever got a black screen was straight after the boot menu once I'd done the post-install stuff (This was right before the 200mb download). Might be able to offer a better suggestion if you have some screenshots. I posted the solution to the blackscreen issue I had in this thread

Thank you all. I didn´t read correctly... i started the update via terminal and it worked here... so i hope the other steps will also run fine :)

I had the same problem (Install finished and black screen after the steam logo for the first boot)... And after trying many recoveries I remembered that my second screen was connected. I unpluged it and started my computer, and steamOS started normally.

I can confirm this. If you don't follow the instructions that say to login to steam from the "steam" user account then running the post-install script. If you have issues running steam using the start menu icon then try opening a terminal and typing "steam &" to run an instance of steam that doesn't block your terminal. Once you have done this you can continue with the instructions of the post-install script.

I think in the manual it is not descriped correctly... i just saw that i should log on as steam user and start steam... first i tried the "Return to Steam" Shortcut... then it tried the Steam shortcut in applications... i have read the manual again, and i couldn´t find anything about the terminal... Thank you again for your help hear, so i succesfully installed my steam OS :)
