SteamOS 2/10/2014 alchemist_beta update
We have just updated the alchemist_beta. Changes include
  • Add additional packages to the repo to support gdb, NFS, and creating an alchemist chroot
  • Preinstall all the firmware packages to enable supporting more wireless network adapters
  • Added steamos-updatelevel dummy package; its version is guaranteed to increase with every new update
  • Updated e2fsprogs, iptables, libdrm, debootstrap, initramfs-tools, curl, libav, eglibc to incorporate upstream Debian fixes

So how about giving AMD a poke and getting us some better drivers ;)

Unfortunaly AMD is the worst GPU for Linux gaming :'( . If AMD don't increase performance 65% I will sell my AMD GPU and buy a nVidia GPU

Awesome, being able to dpkg -s steamos-updatelevel is useful (and cool). Is there a changelog somewhere we can compare the updatelevel info to? I checked the github page and didn't see one. Thanks!

So where is the latest AMD beta driver?
The driver is out for a while now and incorporates a bunch of fixes including some specifically for SteamOS.
Last time AMD released a beta driver it was immediately included in repositories, but now, silence.

So what is going on?

How do we setup our SteamOS system to update from the alchemist_beta (If possible)? I did a custom install from the ISO

Install the steamos-beta-repo package:

sudo apt-get install steamos-beta-repo

Alternatively, you could change alchemist to alchemist_beta in sources.list.

What I mean is that I am puzzled by its absence from official SteamOS repositories.
AMD drivers are...what they are, and we can use every single bit of updates we can get from AMD.

So how come that after all this time of waiting, a driver is out (with fixes for SteamOS no less) and it seems to be ignored by SteamOS devs ?
There must be a reason for this delay, but which one?

Nvidia drivers are also outdated. The OS is progressing in a very slow pace. This update is not that exciting and doesnt fix existing issues, it only updates a few files from debian upstream.

How about if we post the updatelevel along with the announcement here? (today was 83)

Thanks! I imagine you'll appreciate if we include it in our future bug reports.

Guys, what about preinstalled WineHQ in SteamOS? We need more solutions for windows game catalog. Streaming it's not enough. Thanks for your great work ;)

Jvert, did Mesa 10.0.3 make it in the update? It has some bug fixes for the OpenGL stack.

You mean the beta driver? I think that makes no sense for SteamOS. It's not like NVIDIA drivers are in a horrible state where you desperately need the very latest one. Not even Arch Linux ships beta packages in it's repositories.
