SteamOS brewmaster update 2.84 pushed to brewmaster_beta
This is a special edition holiday weekend update. This should fix the problem with the black screen after boot on nvidia machines. There were some other black screens reported that I have not been able to reproduce, so please report here if you are still seeing problems..

==== SteamOS build 84 2016-07-02 ====
  • steamos-base-files - Add additional trigger step to select the correct GLX driver before building initramfs
  • glx-alternatives - Add additional trigger step to select the correct GLX driver before building initramfs
  • amdgpu-pro-installer - Add additional trigger step to select the correct GLX driver before building initramfs
  • nvidia-graphics-drivers - Add additional trigger step to select the correct GLX driver before building initramfs

Yay, holiday edition! Just updated from 2.80 on an Nvidia system, no issues here, but I skipped over 2.83.

I ran the update via CLI after 2.83 broke my SteamOS, and I'm still stuck in a recovery bootloop.

What do you mean by "ran the update via CLI" ?

I was SSH'd in and did sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

For whatever reason, the SteamOS updates never worked on my brewmaster system when I initiated them from BPM (client updates were fine), so I've done all the brewmaster updates that way.

CLI --> Command Line Interpreter/Command Line Interface --> AmigaOS/AmigaDOS --> TripOS in other Words "Shell" :steamfacepalm: I am also from this Direction of the Computerverse! :steammocking:

Boot in Recovery-Mode get into root access and write steamos-autorepair.sh, that fixed it for me..it will compile all Kernel-Modules again, will take some time..:steamhappy:

Stuck in boot loop!
Any way to update to this new release while stuck in a boot loop after last update?

Try this solution from Stu - this worked for me with 2.83 ..it might work for you with 2.84.

I was able to fix my bootloop issue after this update. As jvert said, initially the nouveau driver was being loaded and the auto-repair fixed that but the steam-session still will not start. I looked in ~steam/.xsession-errors and found messages stating that it was unable to display the update GUI (there had been a steam client update downloaded but not installed before I updated steam OS).

I edited /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/20_steamos.conf to comment out the line autologin-user=steam then rebooted. This let me login as 'desktop' to a GUI session. I opened up terminal and ran 'sudo su - steam' followed by 'steam'. This brought up the GTK window style update dialog (several times). When it was finished I reverted 20_steamos.conf and rebooted - now BPM is working properly again !

I tried that a few times, it didn't work for me. I ended up blowing the thing away and reinstalling. Ah well.
