It's actually getting worse ...
Bugs. They've been around games at release for a long time for reasons we all know. But the recent run is just ridiculous.

We had Gal Civ III Crusade, a great expansion but full of bugs, really fracking obvious bugs. Then a Stellaris so-called bug fixing patch which introduced new bugs like the AI couldn't even declare war. I mean how on earth can you miss that? Then Endless Space 2 where the AI can't even build large ships.

So I'm playing the game that seems to be the least buggy. Thankfully there is plenty of choice at the moment.

I'm beginning to understand those that just leave negative reviews for all these games on release and just want to vomit all over Steam forums.

So what are you playing now?
Unfortunately the standards have not just dropped, its GONE.
In the past devs would employ game testers. This does not seem the case anymore...WHY you might ask!!!
.
.
.
Because WE became the BETA Testers!!!
We are the Guienie pigs now.
They just want to push out games as fast as they can for MONEY.

We buy supposedly stable finished games only to find out we are the bug testers.

We are actually supposed to get paid for this you know. They using us to test their product.
.
.
No no no, let me rephrase, we are paying THEM to be their bug and beta testers.

This is the state of gaming and its getting worse.

The more the devs and publishers get away with this, the more they will do this and worse for the future.

Oh and hi Icemania

Stellaris ... after the 1.6.1 opt-in that fixed the declare war bug ... with Mods that eliminate some of the other bugs not fixed. Then, when the next Paradox patch breaks something else, hopefully more will be fixed in the other two, and I'll continue this trend of playing the least buggy game at the time. Hopefully, at least 1 of the 3 will be free enough of bugs when I'm in a gaming mood!

Yeah. All I can think to do is eXterminate. Stuff playing as a pacifist. The United Federation of Planets shall soon eat the Borg. Resistance is futile, it seems.
And in case you are wondering what I mean ... I'm playing an unfinished Mod because it's less buggy than the other options (Star Trek New Horizons).
Didn't ES2 get a significant launch patch for that issue?

I otherwise agree with you. It's getting frustrating. Stellaris being the worst, as it takes quite a long time for Paradox to solve issues. Hell, there's still quite a few remaining from launch.

Crusade, as good as it is, has suffered because of the bugs, although SD have had a really quick turn around with the patches.
Yeah - it's really frustrating.

I don't quite know where the fault lies, but it seems the intersection of early access, open development, crowdfunding, hype trains, and fan-ism has normalized games having an unpolished launch.

I think it's a system problem with the way the whole industry operates and you can't really lay the blame at one place. Gamers like the idea of being part of the sausage making process, so they like early access and EA can be good for devs that need funding in the short term. Publishers and/or other financial constraints often push games out the door earlier than they should be. We as gamers are demanding more design excellence in our games - and yet I'm not sure there are enough really good designers to go around. Many big AAA games succumb to design by committee and focus-group based development cycles. Gamers have resigned themselves to the fact that many games release needing 6+ months of patching to get finished - and end up using that as defense for their favorite developers, which just exacerbates the problem.

Not sure what the solution is!
I wouldn't call Stellaris/Paradox the worst out of all the recent 4x titles released in the last few years but it's FAR from the best.

As many of you know I LOVE Stellaris and I personally think it's going to be the 4x game that sets the bar for the foreseeable future

That being said it's not immune to my criticisms.

Every major patch released since 1.1 has needed an emergency hotfix to resolve very blatant and obvious bugs.

"Adams" was the worst thus far with its AI /DOW bug but even "Heinline" had a brutal bug where you could not re invade a planet taken by the AI during times of war.

Granted paradox fixes these issues in a timely manner buts it's frustrating as hell.

I'm sure many of you are in the same position I am in where time is a precious commodity.

Gaming is my hobby and when a specific patch/DLC/expansion is released I schedule time from my day to day requirements to enjoy it.

Lately i have been crushed because my experience enjoying these releases has been riddled with bugs that doesn't make my experience enjoyable.

I had to abandon a game because 1.6 broke achievements. Again.

Getting off Stellaris for a moment , I have kept my eye on GC3 Crusade and ES2 but with a great deal of caution.

I don't want to purchase a game, schedule time away from my family to enjoy it , if it's simply not ready to play in a relative bug free experience.

All major studios who make 4x games have earned a failing grade on this aspect this year , in my opinion

Yes , I realize it's not an easy job to eliminate every bug in a complex game like most titles I've mentioned.

That's why we , as consumers, pay full price for a product.
Most understand it's not easy , if it was everyone would do it.

It's also not unreasonable to expect a better experience at launch than what we have been given , especially in the last year.

Devs.

Do it better.
I've been thinking about what to write for potential retrospective of sorts on the last year in 4X gaming. With the release of ES2, we've now been through the release of the "Big 3" space 4x: Stellaris, MoO: CTS, and ES2. It's a "Big 4" if you also consider that Civ6 launched in the middle of all this.

This has been a very active period for 4X games with a lot of sustained development - and there are a lot of other games released alongside the big 3/4 as well.

This should be major happy times - and yet every single one of these titles still feels underdeveloped in places. By that I mean core mechanical systems in the games that aren't really performing where they should be. Or where the overall pace and flow of the game wasn't that tight - or where massive AI exploits or deficiencies render the strategic challenge much less than its potential.

I have to imagine that one of the big challenges with making a 4X game is that it takes so long to actually play a game through to completion that refining the overall arc and structure of the game - which requires lots of refinement/iteration - is difficult from a resource standpoint. When you couple this to the fact that 4X games are rarely "feature complete" until quite late in the development cycle, testing the full, core gameplay loop and refining it enough so that the game experience shines the whole way through is practically impossible it seems.

The above may be why the end game experience just falls apart so often. Exploits are never really addressed. Victory conditions are rarely interesting or paced very well. And so on...

Not to mention that a game like the new MOO got abandoned as well (correct me if i am wrong). They said no more patches or anything else for that game. They did not even give this game a chance to breath and have peope play and get to a proper end game.
Also game was left with bugs still in it and now will never get fixed.

That is why I stand by my previous post above, we pay to be the testers and then games get abandoned as well.

I should clarify: it is the worst out of the 4x games that I have personally played, and by 'worst' I most certainly meaan in how annoyingly buggy it has been.
Well there's a reason why a lot of people are claiming a video game crash is incoming and its not because there's too many quality releases...
They didn't say anything. They haven't been very communicative. Having said that, i don't really think we're going to see new things for MOO as well.

I think they were expecting the kind of success Civilization 5 has (both games are very similar) and were very surprised by the poor sales. I think that NuMOO deserved better sales as, imho, it's better than Civ 5.

Also Mezmorki on your previous post

"Gamers have resigned themselves to the fact that many games release needing 6+ months of patching to get finished"

Worst of all is, some games get abandoned when reaching that stage because the devs moved on to the next game.

That i why we should get a finished game on release and then dedicated bug fixing at least for next 3-6 months.

I hate EA because its now an abused system.

Actually they stated it themselves, they announced they were done and nothing more now. They are moving on. If i remember correctly it was either on their Steam Store page under the updates or one of the reviewers had the link to it. Cannot remember.

All i know is that the game got abandoned too quickly and it still has quirks in it. If i knew this i would never have bought the game but bought it on the faith of being MOO and devs promised big things in the beginning. What a let down.
