Actually if you can't login with beta and ok with release look here

I had to place the switch -tcp to Steam.exe shortcut for being able to login with the beta client , no problems with release client

As of writing It seems the UDP servers are yet unstable

Without -tcp I'm stuck at login prompt that never disappear

If you are not fine with modifying your shortcut do this instead

Hit Windows keyboard key + R and type

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp

(Edit your path to Steam accordingly, Windows sample)

Btw if you wonder where I have found this was because I had a VM with a steam release on it so I figure out was on Steam ends so I found this excellent kb article

I just found this little gem of a suggestion. Not only did it fix the failed logins, but, the client seems to be faster as well. Except for community pages that is.

When you right click a shortcut to Steam.exe, Properties, and you add -tcp at the end of the target command line, target should be showing as path\Steam.exe -tcp
