A game that uniquely stands out from the likes of Civilization and Master of Magic with its highly sophisticated RPG elements and substantial amount of PvE-oriented map events. In a way, it's a bit like HoMM's single player campaign or like the Spellforce series. Factions, individual units and heroes are all customizable and many playstyles and approaches are possible.

Props to making a version of Master of Magic in which champions are actually good

Fallen Enchantress is a good game, and it was great when it came out in 2013. The combat, city/civilization building, unit customization, and RPG elements were pretty well executed, and I enjoyed replaying the game a few times. However, if you are looking for a game in the "fantasy civ meets tactical combat" genre today, there are some much better options now: Endless Legends and Age of Wonders 4 come to mind first, and perhaps Total War Warhammer depending on what you are after. All three of them have cleaner graphics (I don’t hate the ones in Fallen Enchantress, but the others are undeniably better), and more importantly (to me) they enable multiplayer, so you have the option to play with friends, which drastically increases the longevity of games for me.
In summary, I would recommend this game, but if you were to ask me if you should buy it, I would ask if you have these others already, since they will likely be more what you are looking for.
That being said, Fallen Enchantress IS fun, and executed its systems well before the competition was available (AoW2 and AoW3 are far less effective city builders than this FE, or AoW4), and it deserves props for that.
