(This would of course include a group for all the major steam games and special groups)
For groups that are "Public" you can join and leave as much as you like. You would then get their announcements for events/updates, etc. Perhaps fix the lag problem specific to your game...?
You can also find user created groups for other subjects by typing it into the search box on that page.
Another thing is view the profile pages of your steam friends (if available). See what Steam groups they are in (both Official and non). Usually you'll find something new and interesting.
You might also notice there is a badges section on your profile page. If you work your way through those tasks you'll have a better understanding of what Steam is and does for gamers. (You don't have to do them all, unless you really want that badge). 9 years ago when I started on steam there were no such things. Its a recent invention to get people familiar with Steam.
Tied to all these steam groups are non-suprisingly, the games they're about. If you share common multiplayer games with friends then you can get a lot of fun out of Steam. There's even a wishlist. Put a game on it, a friend notices and perhaps gets it for you on birthdays.
Posting on these forums here is a great first step though.
One thing I do notice... is that your steam profile page is completely empty. One can only guess what you're into based on your owned steam games. You're not obliged to put anything there either, its up to you.
Feel free to view my profile and past comments (Click on my name/the down arrow on these forums). I happen to have my account fully public... I like to live dangerously...
For your own safety (if you haven't already) DO turn on Steam Guard. If someone tries to log in as you (to steal your items) they would have to also break into your email to get the secret code that allows that new computer to use steam as you.
Welcome to Steam. Strap yourself in. Its going to be quite an exciting ride.
