Game failed to start (unknown error)
I've been attempting to help a friend get his Path of Exile working again but he keeps getting this error. Now I've posted this in the Steam section due to it being a steam problem and not the actual game, as this error seems to be spread across many different games on steam.

He is running Windows 7 64 Bit.

What we have tried:

- Running both Steam and Path of Exile as administrator

- Update drivers

- Disable UAC

- Disable Startup programs and services

- Reinstalling game

- Reinstalling steam

- Deleting the Path of Exile folder in My Documents

- Verifying game cache (He always gets 4 files failed to validate everytime he does it, nomatter how many times he verifys!)

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

Thanks!

If the bitness isn't an issue, the next common root cause would be the virus scanner being paranoid and thinking the game is a virus.

He's not using an anti-virus currently and Windows Firewall is off so I don't think anything can be blocking it.

Tell him to run a disk scan. Maybe the 4 files that fail to validate always land on bad sectors.
And can "he" post himself? This proxying is irritating.

@ReBoot I have the same problem. Ive tried a bunch of things. Run as admin, uninstalling re installing but when I check the integrity It says Im missing 4 files or something like that. Is that the 4 files youre talking about? What do you mean by run a disk scan? Please help, youre the only one that seems to know exactly what to do. Thanks a bunch

Same problem? Path of Exile on Windows 7 64 bit?
PS: Why don't you click the "reply" button on my post if you want to address me? I usually tend to skip over everything that doesn't do that.

Yep same problem. Windows 7 64 bit. I ran a disk check last night. Gonna try downloading and running it now. Wish me luck!

Make sure you have done everything in the title of the thread that applies to you. Be sure Windows itself is up to date also.

Post a screenshot or shots of all of your installed programs. You can use this site imgur.com and post the links here. Be sure we can see all the programs, please. Thanks.

EDIT..You are going to want to take those links down ASAP. They have your Steam login clearly visible from your client in them. That does the security of your account no good to post that up here. I suggested that you post showing your installed programs.

Not asking for your Steam games, please. Asking for your installed programs. And it is interesting that you replied the way you did because if you have that many programs installed...

then that surely can possibly be the reason or one of the reasons you have this issue. Because it is more likely that you have ones from this list in that case....

Now you understand why I am asking for you to post those screenshots. Because people always seem to miss ones from the list or like ones on the list when I simply link them the list.

Thanks.

Thank you for reporting back to us that you fixed and what the issue was. AVG is in bold and with a green symbol there so it is particularly problematic with Steam as you can see. We are really glad you solve the issue and wish you luck always.

One more thing, just in case, please. If your games were affected in any way, you may want ot verify the game files just in case if you have issues with those games. Do that exactly as suggested here...

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

AVG or another programs may have messed with the games files, as antivirus programs that don't get along with Steam really like to quarantine the .exe files for said games sometimes, among other issues that can happen. Thanks.
