One thing I didn't see mentioned on that page is the Burglary level 5 ability 'Five-Finger Discount' which will take an item from the shop without angering Brax.
That said, you CAN still steal from him and get away with it without getting killed, if you have the right skills or the right potions/fungi/wands/etc.
This is what I recommend, (assuming you fit the requirements outlined in the explanation):
1. Clear the level you are on first, because you will not want to return to it for anything. This includes completing any quests that are still left, selling anything to Brax that you want to sell, using all the anvils, opening all the locked chests, etc.
2. Plan your escape route carefully. If there is not a nearby down-staircase, find the nearest teleportal squares and know which one(s) will get you near to the staircase. Without careful planning, you could find yourself with too much to handle.
2b. Since you are leaving, you may as well take everything of value, not just that juicy object of your desire.
3. Assuming you don't want to fight your way out (and I don't recommend that unless you are very high level and a real, all-around stud or studdette), you'll need some means of rapid movement, such as those from Mathemagics, Burglary, Artful Dodger, and/or Ley Walker. Spatial Instability Infusions are generally not that great for this purpose because you want to direct where you end up, and generally speaking, they will not get you out of the room safely.
4. It's also a good idea to have a means of hiding. This includes Potions of Invisibility, the short-lived Inky Hoglanterns, and/or Burglary's Ninja Vanish. This is not ABSOLUTELY necessary, but just highly recommended, as you will not be attacked while invisible. Keep in mind though that if you use any skill (such as a teleport), that your invisibility will fall. Also keep in mind that Dread Collectors will keep spawning so long as there is a Brax on that level left alive. So you can find yourself easily surrounded. While invisible, this may mean waiting patiently for a hole to form in their formation so that you can pass. Don't waste your invisibility by prematurely using your skills/items, and only use them when absolutely necessary.
And that should do it. Never ever return to that level again.
I'm using Moves in Mysterious Ways in Burglary, and as long as you don't walk, it works for me.
I've done this several times, how I got my Kronghammer and dark mirror shield.
So, clear the floor first, steal your items, then get out fast befor the screen fills with angry dread collectors.
Just make sure there's nothing left you want to do on that floor or any floor above it.
Protip: make a path that allows the other Brax to come to you, since they will and the Dreds stop spawning when all the Brax are dead.
