I had similar crash, which was caused by running MSI Afterburner in background. After closing it, game run fine.

Fixed it:

Find the Borderlands.exe in steamapps\common\borderlands folder.
Right click, select Properties
Go to Compatibility and run in Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

Only problem is, the steam overlay wont come up so you cant get achievements. Sorry the instructions arent accurate, but its because im currently on my macbook and cant check while im typing this up.

The exact location is steamapps\common\borderlands\Binaries

Make sure you select the .exe and not the icon file (note that the icon file has no compatibility options, obviously).

Not sure if it no longer crashes for me, haven't tested long enough. I can still use steam in-game though. I've set MSI Afterburner to apply some GPU fan settings at windows bootup. If Borderlands still crashes, that's the next thing I'll look at.

I solved this problem by running the compatability wizard and you will have to select Not listed then browse to C:\x86programs\stean\steamapps\ borderlands application. select that then choose windows vista service pack 2 that it ran best in last and the game runs perfect and steam works in game to.

Copy cudart.dll located in \Steam\SteamApps\common\Borderlands\Binaries
Then rename the copy to physxcudart_20.dll

I confirm that the solution provided by matheww works great. It felt weird when the installation used to previously work fine and the integrity was confirmed by steam. I initially thought it was a problem with the SMAA Injection, but turns out it still works fine.
