For me, I'm using 7.1 in realtek audio manager, though I only have a Quad setup. (I have the side speakers disabled (unchecked) so their sound gets split appropriately between front and rear speakers through the audio driver) Though in other games, like Call of Juarez the Cartel, I have to switch to 5.1 or Quad or the game crashes :(
You can try alt-tabbing out of the game, and changing your speaker setup/config and listen to hear if the BGM cut out/starts playing through your rear/side speakers when you change your setup. That's what I did and I could tell the game was recognizing the changes on the fly (rear speakers cut out when I switched to stereo).
