[Please read] Reason for the bad FPS
Hey Valve,
I think I figured out what went wrong with the most recent update which is causing FPS drops for so many of us.
In the changelog you talked about optimizing performance, and I think you might have screwed the multicore-rendering in the process. I did some tests with different ingame-settings, and it appears multicore-rendering doesn't do anything, anymore. The FPS stay absolutely the same, while changing it on and off in L4D2 raises the FPS from 100 to 140 (in the exact same scene ofc). Please take a look into it !

Bump this, so Valve will read it and take a look into, instead of getting annoyed by all the raging people in the so-called "mega thread".

Yeah had the task manager up on my 2nd screen. Only 2 of my 4 cores were doing any work and overall cpu usage topped out at 18%.

Yep. No matter if on or off. It doesn't affect the cpu usage at all, anymore

This.

no issues for me. Im guessing you're on intel procs?

Yep. I'm on intel

So far its intel owners who are effected, as i would expect as intel procs are single threaded power houses, but they lack the grunt of a multi threaded chip like the FX series (in a physics calculation the intel out performs FX, but in an actual video or audio production the FX eats the intel for breakfest).

Go actually makes use of all 8 of my FX cores near 90% each.

Same problem with a Intel Core I7

Well I got an i7 - 4700MQ. That should be more than enough for a game like this. Also, the game used all cores before the update, so the cpu itself isn't really the point.

well intel cores are virtual cores aka not real physical cores. my FX proc has 8 real smaller cores that work together. Doesnt make the intel any weaker, it just means without a physical core it does more work virtually simulating the other cores of your intel proc.

which 4 core AMD? phenom? if a Phemon its the same issue as the intel, i beleive phenoms used virtual cores as well.

It really isn't about AMD or INTEL, it's about the game that screwed a working function. It performed perfectly before the update.
schüt shootem Feb 6, 2014 @ 3:28am
Yup, i also tried it and it made no difference having it either on or off.

architecture dont care about the update. if the update at all asked the proc to work harder and the proc incapable of the task will cause performance issues aka a bottleneck.
