You don't need one, you can download manually from the Nexus (you do need an account, but it's free and they don't seem to send spammy emails or anything, at least not in my experience). I think there are other places to download (I downloaded from some other site first because I misunderstood and thought the Nexus was a pay-to-use site, but it's not) but I don't know how safe they are.

me too. at first, when you are signing up, it says pick a payment option, but if you pick nothing and hit the continue button at the bottom it will still go through to the next step.

i recomend getting NMM. you probably will eventually want to use mods, so you might as well get a jump on learning how it all works.

NMM is good, now my blasted browser actually decided to recognise the NMM links should cause the NMM thing to do something (before it just did nothing if I clicked on them). I haven't figured out how to use fomod installers, though, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, mind.

Alternative to NMM? You should be able to download pretty much anything off the Nexus with the 'download manually' (or something like that) links, then it's just a case of extracting (use the 7zip installer, especially if it's a .7z format) the files to the skyrim data folder (should be somewhere like C:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data) in most cases (check for installation instructions, though, because sometimes there are specific files for different versions of a mod.)

Then you need to go to the Data Files section of the Skyrim launcher and check that the patches are activated (tick box next to them should be ticked) and in the correct order (which I believe is skyrim, update, unofficial skyrim patch, dawnguard, unofficial dawnguard patch, hearthfires, unofficial hearthfires patch, dragonborn, unofficial dragonborn patch, but I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong) - if they're not, you can move them by selecting the one you want to move and using the arrow buttons next to (or it might be below) the list. You can also do this in NMM if you have it.

Definetely depends on your computer whether you run vanilla Skyrim with no glitches. Computers are as individual as people; everyone is different.

Minor glitches as expected with a game this complex. I haven't found a need for the "unofficial" patches yet.

This is absolutely correct (for if you don't want to use NMM). I don't use NMM myself, I do it all manually so I can vouch for the accuracy of this statement.
