Hearthfire is by far the best I've seen.

Wyrmspire manor is also pretty decent. It's a mod.

I can't get enough Player homes :D I use Castle Grey (one of the best IMO) Dovah Strummah Holl (dragon Hall), and Stonewall garden ( a sizable underground home with over 100 weapons racks, over 40 weapons and sheild racks a full bar and kitchen with dining room Inn style, and a fully stocked forge and 4 vendors plus more) and any hearthfire home, base game homes that are nice are really all of them after starting out with the waterfront shack in Oblivion even Breezhome is a nice looking home!

you can also use Placable Empire Builder mod and choose how and where to build your home or choose one of about a dozen pre-made player homes though they need to be on a flat surface or as flat as you can find and you have to furnish them yourself but it's well worth it!

Jaggerfeld,
thank you very much every one

Most of the player home mods are too big for my tastes, what I really want is a little place like Anise's Cabin (but maybe with a plantable garden) as a sort of starter home before I can afford a proper house. I know there are a couple, but the ones I tried seemed pretty buggy :( I guess one could probably take over Anise's place but I'm guessing there's no safe storage.

Yeah, I might look into that for my next character, thanks, I think I looked at it before but wasn't completely sold on the location.

Tastes are tastes, for me there's more than enough player housing in the vanilla game.
If you count in the guild dwelling places you get at the end of each questline, vanilla game gives you: 13 homes to live!!!!

The only defect is that when you start you haven't got a place to store your loot unless you rush for breezhome (thus forcing you to activate the mainquestline).

So I downloaded a really small mod that gives you a supersmall cabin attached to riverwood sawmill. You can only stand in there and sleep, but it has few chests where i can put stuff untill i become owner of something bigger)

I like the vanilla homes but I also like to be able to choose where i want to live like i just got done building a small farm/outpost outside of Rorikstead since that place has a big problem with bandits and dragons and there is the occasional Thalmor patrol, I figured it would be a great place to live and keep an eye on the town.

There is a mod which heavily upgrades the Breeze home. Literally the best house mod personally. It's small, cozy and makes sense. Sadly I'm not a fan of Whiterun, I prefer Solitude, but I still think it's a great change.

It's literally the PERFECT Home, while still being in a major city, and I like my homes in the cities. I hate having a house so far from a village or city.

I do like Breezehome, although my current character has 8040 bounty in Whiterun, so she might not be going back there any time soon. (Didn't even think to take out Nazeem on the way out *sigh*)

Yeah, I got approached by a bounty collector, but he kind of killed me when I refused to pay up (wasn't convinced it would actually pay the bounty, or I'd have probably tried paying it and killing him) and my last save was too long ago for him to appear again. I've got the bribe perk now, though, so I'll probably try that at some point. I'll let them calm down a bit first, though...I'm not even sure how it got that high, I only killed one guy and smacked a couple of guards with my sword on the way out of town. Maybe my followers killed some other people?

I really like Dragon Falls Manor mod - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=13433

House on one of the best looking places in the game, epic!

Ooh, that is pretty. At the moment my character's got Winstad Manor (with a coffin in the basement) as her main home, plus Proudspire Manor as her official residence, mainly got it because I wanted to try out Jordis (who is quite sweet, and looks nice in her Dawnguard-looted armour - got to keep up appearances, especially now the missus has been turned...) but I actually rather like it, especially fully furnished (although I'm a bit put out that I spent 500 septim on 'patio furniture' which appears to be, uh, a cheap table and chairs. Guess they had to cut corners after stocking my alchemy lab so nicely/given I, erm, didn't actually pay any actual money for any of the furnishings.)

Breezehome with the penthouse mod. Perfect for relaxing and also for shooting arrows into vampires/dragons when they attack Whiterun without having to leave your home.
