Connect Steam with DRM-FREE

I have a friend who uses the DRM-Free version and i am on steam, But i can't figure out how to join the same game as them? any suggestions or is this impossible? If i do a private match is there anyway to invite them?

AFAIK, the only way is thru Gamespy.

They should really add some kinda in game buddy list, Or direct Ip connection, thats pretty ridiculous

Yeah, i know about the steam buddy system, But wish they had a buddy system within the game to join both types of systems. I mean i could see if it was another platform, but you're both on PC and you can't join eachother, thats crazy!
