The game itself has some issues, mainly pathfinding, and some mild stability issues and a few script glitches. Still very playable, though, and sucks you in.
I also played both BattleZone remakes (the original BattleZone is from the early 80s), and this doesn't compare. The controls are much more immediate and the environments are very convincing. You have a huge strategic metagame added to a tactical core game play that has a lot of grand moments - if you like perfecting your invasion strategies and logistics, because you're going to invade a LOT of islands in this game.
Fortunately, Gaea Mission has more variety in island fights compared to the old Carrier Command classic. Let's just say coordinating a strike with 8 combat units and piloting one yourself in a snowstorm with the enemy while trying hard to take out the signal scrambling facility that causes your screen to show nothing but static is one of the more intense experiences I had lately in a single player game.
Hmm, might have to dig up my disks and see if I can still snipe scout pilots out of their ride. Heh, good ol' days..
+1
It is in EA right now but the DEV is involved daily for comments and questions.
take a look if you like these type of games, it will not disapoint.
Seems like games like this and Dragon Commander keep missing the mark with strategy/base building games where you play as one of the units. I always loved running over the other team's pilots.
Also if anyone has played Operation Flashpoint there is a game mode called CTI which brings back so many memories.
This game made me feel like real deep living a space adventure and fighting for hours and hours.
I hope someone remembers to compile a game like this with the actual graphics technology, cause it will be a tremendous success.
