cannot get game to work

i finished portal 1 and decided to get portal 2 so i bought it . and when i went to play it the main menu was perfect and everything else was fine too. but when i put start game it was all black . i could hear the sounds and see the ''look up'' and down but other than that nothing .CAN ANYBODY HELP
