You can play co-op straightaway, but if you haven't completed the singleplayer campain I recommend you do so. :)

Sure no prob, reason is because there are some game elements that come later during the campaign, and the singleplayer teaches you what they are so you wouldn't be clueless while you're doing coop :) Have fun!
