Try to check the cache

how do i do that?

Right click on the portal 2 in the library - Properties - Local Files tab - Check cache button. I'm not sure that the tabs and buttons have the correct names, i've translated them from russian to english, but the naming should be pretty similar.

i have just done that and it said it failed and will now reaquire a file. is this good?

For me it was OK. If it requeries a file - I think it should download it. Also I've heard that reinstall of the game can fix the issue. You can read the other threads here, a lot of people are having the same problem after Steam update.

aw man i hope this works because i have a 1mbps download speed and downloading portal2 alone took almost 24 hours
This has happened for me too today, ever since I updated Steam...

oh yeah there was a steam update.. im going to have a look at the change log. and when i "installed" the new cache it said the steam servers are too busy to handle my request

mine has stopped crashing thanks to xdeez advice:) do what he says and maybe that will solve your problem
Mine keeps crashing too its really annoying -_-
try disabling steam overlay, go Steam > Setting > In game > untick the box. Verify the game cache prior just to make sure, and I usually disable my antivirus before launching the game, but only seems to need to this for portal 2 and L4D2. Enable antivirus once the game launch as a precaution, these solved the crashes for me :)
i jjust verified my cache and that fixed it
