Crashes On start

When I join portal 2, I get a black screen O_O And I re-downloaded the game, validated all files, AND STILL CRASH >_< HELP!

Still, even though it works now, I bought aperture tag. WHERE IS THE CFG FILES AND STUFF I DONT WANT TO WASTE 8.00 JUST ON IT!!! >_<

I'm having the same problem, every time I try to start it it crashes right after the Valve thing at the beginning

No. When I click on it, it gives me a black screen. No menu. :I No audio either. Its the same with ALL The games that have the same graphics as portal 2. (The Stanley Parable, Half-Life, etc.) Redownloaded, validated game cache. all files are downloaded. But only the SPECIFIC games that have the same graphics as portal 2 crash. WHY?

You have to delete tha apache folder, that's what worked for me.

where do you find the folder?

I believe he's referring to the appcache folder. For me, it's in C:/Steam/appcache. It could be different for you. But it's in your main Steam folder.

Delete THE ENTIRE folder?

That would be my guess. Just delete the entire thing. Don't worry, Google says it's safe. Delete and restart Steam. Doesn't hurt to try.

This sounds like the default resolution of the game is beyond that of your monitor.
To fix this navigate to where you installed most commonly :-

C:\Program Files (x86)Steam\SteamApps\common\Portal 2\update\cfg

once thier find and open "video.txt" in a txt editor notepad would probably do (I used notepad++)

you should be able to find the lines that read

"setting.defaultres" "XXXX"
"setting.defaultresheight" "XXXX"

Change what ever the XXXX maybe in your file to something your monitor can actualy do
if unsure I sugest 1024 x 768 as its a safe bet most screens can do this and you can modify it from the ingame menu later.

Example :-

"setting.defaultres" "1024"
"setting.defaultresheight" "768"

Hmm...I dunno. BEFORE Portal 2 worked just to let you know. Haven't tried it yet however, but I will. ...Mabye cause of a update?
