AVG claims its win32/heur. I think its a false positive but definitely something valve needs to fix.

Yeh. Turns out the solution to the problem was disabling AVG Antivirus for 5 minutes (15 minutes & Until Restart are the maximum options; 5 was minimum). Just in case anyone else was having the same problem. :]

Just add the client.dll to you virus checkers exception list and your good to go, on AVG your exceptions list is under Tools>Advanced settings>Resident shield

I got the same thing and tried everything. I verified the game cache, restarted my computer, then ended up re-installing the game. Don't do that. None of it worked. I then looked on here and followed Docta's instructions that are above my comment, even though my husband said he had uninstalled AVG. It was my last resort. I had no idea where to find the client.dll to add it to exceptions, so in case you don't know either, it's in program files/steam/steamapps/common/l4d2/l4d2/bin. It FINALLY works!
