Just recently finished my run through Darksiders; I must say I was very pleased with the experience. The game reminded me of a cross between Legend of Zelda and God of War. The plot of the story isn't necessarily anything to write home about, but the actual atmosphere of the game is superb. I found the environments in particular to be highly immersive; each area has its own unique theme. The non-player character models, including their animations, are extraordinary.
The combat isn't particularly evolved and the game itself isn't exactly challenging. I personally played on Apocalyptic and would recommend others do the same. There were a surprising amount of puzzles, invariably utilizing some recently acquired gadget. These items are often necessary for collectibles, but rarely are required in areas beyond which they were designed.
If I had to summarize my experience with this game I would say this: It starts very strong, but begins to struggle in the end. There are enough "awesome" moments that keep you engaged through the ~15 hours but the repetitious challenge/puzzle formula, shallow improvement system, and anticlimactic ending make for a mediocre finish.
I still recommend the game. It was quite an enjoyable adventure and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this stylish world in Darksiders II.
