Steam shortcuts for split-screen play
All of the tutorials to get this working are kind of a pain and half of them are out of date, so I made a bunch of Steam shortcuts to launch the game in split-screen mode. This assumes you have two xbox 360 controllers, which should be turned on before launching it. This also assumes Steam is installed here: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/24682992/l4d-splitscreen.zip

Unzip, turn on/plug in your controllers, double-click on the campaign you want.

Of course, links and such tend to die after a while, and you may be (rightfully) leery of downloading and running things from some guy on the internet, so here's how to make your own:

1) Make a copy of the Steam shortcut on your desktop.
2) Go to the properties of the copied shortcut and make the target look like the following:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 500 -console +ss_splitmode 1 +ss_map l4d_farm01_hilltop

-applaunch 500 means "Run Left 4 Dead".
- console enables the console.
+ss_splitmode 1 is horizontal splitscreen; +ss_splitmode 2 is vertical.
+ss_map l4d_whatever loads the map. Here's the valid map names of the beginning of each campaign in my copy of L4D:

Blood Harvest l4d_farm01_hilltop
Crash Course l4d_garage01_alleys
Dead Air l4d_airport01_greenhouse
Death Toll l4d_smalltown01_caves
No Mercy l4d_hospital01_apartment
I have no idea what this is but maybe I'll try it one day tutorial_standards

I included a readme.txt that explains how to choose your character; not going to bother posting that here because this post is too long already. Enjoy. -m3lang3

Nice tutorial!
Is it possible to enable split screen for Versus mode?
CaptainAchiever 26 out. 2012 às 4:10
I found how to do it. Type versus after the map name.
Just open the console type: ss_map l4d_farm01_hilltop versus
Cool. But just to let you kow you can enable split screen from the console at any time. The only thing is, if you havent' done so already, you will need to set the second players controls which can also be done through the console (cmd2 bind ???). And you don't need 360 controllers to do split screen. I personally use a 360 controller to play single screen on and offline.

And by the way, tutorial_standards is the second map of Dead Line. It's a short but fully playable demo map. I have it as part of the map cycle on my server.

Thanks for the info re: tutorial_standards. I created the shortcuts because I was finding it a time-consuming hassle to pull out the keyboard and type things on a far-away TV screen when a friend would come over and wanted to play split-screen. All of the instructions online refer to console commands but I had to go digging through Steam developer documentation to find the commandline switches.

Has annyone tried this on windows 7 -64 bit
And with another steam location
My steam for example is located in the map G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
But when i edit the shortcuts they just send me to the maps

You should be able to just modify the paths of each shortcut by going to the properies of each shortcut. Do post again if you run into problems.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong this is what i changed:
I set target to "G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam" -applaunch 500 -console +ss_splitmode 1 +ss_map l4d_farm01_hilltop

and Start in to: "G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam"
swforlife 8 jan. 2013 às 10:33
I see what i did wrong it should be G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 500 -console +ss_splitmode 1 +ss_map l4d_farm01_hilltop

May others learn from my mistake :D

People wish this worked for L4D2 without losing Lobby Reservation...
