Try with WINE, I can play smooth (+/- 30fps) with open source driver (xf86-video-ati).
My: SET LAUNCH OPTIONS : -dxlevel 70 -console -novid -refresh 120 -heapsize 1572864 -high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noipx -nojoy -width 1366 -height 768

There will be a linux version of this eventually. All the valve games are getting ported for use w/ steamOS. The only question is how long will it take.

I suspect this game isn't much of a priority right now, so it might take a while.

Right now their priority is likely Portal 2, and making sure Left 4 Dead 3 launches with Linux and SteamOS support.
