Yeah the new guy gets the worst fief, if any. Grind up some renown and relations, go capture a castle, then ask to keep it.

You always get only a village as a new vassal, mostly one which is in a border region to other factions, so it will be raided often. To get a castle or even city you have to either initiate the siege and then conquer it (the king will give it to you afterwards in most cases) or you have to have a really high amount of renown compared to the other lords and good relations to the king. Then if there is a new city or castle conquered, you have chances of getting it.

Yes this is a good trick that I use sometimes. However there is a risk of getting caught by a huge mob of enemy lords before you get a chance to join your chosen faction. Actually I usually target a town. I will grab more than one town if I can or just an additional castle.

The villages I will leave unassigned if I can and not claim them for myself. This way they will go into the pool of unassigned fiefs in the faction I join and will be given out to other lords. These lords will then help to patrol the area around my towns and castles. Protecting the tarriff income from caravans is more valuable than the villages. Villages are a pain to protect anyways so best to focus on towns and castles. If I ever decide to rebel those villages will revert back to me since ownership goes to whoever controls the attached town or castle.
