The villages I will leave unassigned if I can and not claim them for myself. This way they will go into the pool of unassigned fiefs in the faction I join and will be given out to other lords. These lords will then help to patrol the area around my towns and castles. Protecting the tarriff income from caravans is more valuable than the villages. Villages are a pain to protect anyways so best to focus on towns and castles. If I ever decide to rebel those villages will revert back to me since ownership goes to whoever controls the attached town or castle.
