At the bottom of the starter are small icons that show which dlcs are installed.

Did you download and install the expansion and not just the base game?

The easiest way to make sure this gets done right is to install Origin and register you sims expansions with it. If the expansion is installed it will say play when you select it from the games menu. If it's not installed or detected (which means your sims game can't find it eaither) it will give you the option to downlaod it. Anything from EA and be registered, downlaoded, activated, and installed with origin. As much as I hate Origin I find it to be an entenssal tool for using games from EA. Helps kill headaces like this. If orign says the game is fine but it's still not showing up try reinstalling the game through origin. You may have to add the game to steam as a non steam game to get the steam overlay if you do though. Otherwise you'll be using the origin overlay. Other than that *shrugs*

yeah steam installs the expansions automatically, it just treats them as DLC. Verify your files and then run the base game from inside Steam.

Hey i got the sims 3 town life stuff dlc and i feel like i just wasted 20 bucks how can i make it work

Just look in the Buy Mode. Town Life Stuff is just added things for your Sims to buy; it should all be there if you've been online and given it enough time to download.

The Sims 3 was written before "activation" was all that popular - thus no actual activation.

From your Steam Library - in online mode and viewing Game Details - verify that you have the DLCs that you want installed checked; or uncheck the ones you don't want installed? Then a verification of the local cache files should add (or remove) whichever.

After you wait out the completion of the verification, you should exit Steam and re-boot your computer, before playing The Sims 3.

Through steam? In the library, if it says it's uninstalled, right click the expansion pack in question. That should get it downloading!

I had a different solution, so sorry for necroing the thread but since this was the first google result for the issue I figured I'd post it here. Where it lists your DLC in the library, there should be three columns: ITEM, INSTALL, ACQUIRED. Click the word INSTALL and it'll install all the DLC in that column that is checked. It seems obvious typing it out, but I never thought to treat a column's label as a functional button. If it doesn't work with a regular left click, try right clicking it instead.
