Making a living
I bought Sims 3 a couple of weeks ago and got Supernatural two days ago. I made a vampire in Moonlight Falls with the Artistic, Brave, Athletic, Charismatic and Great Kisser. I decided to try to make it as a painter as I'd heard it and Writer are good ways to make money, and I want to get one of the big fancy mansions. I just hit level eight of Painter but it doesn't seem to be as lucrative as I'd hoped.
What's a good way for my character to earn a living, while still having time for the interesting parts of the game?

I've never tried doing either of those but http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/ is a pretty good place to look for info. At least it helped me a lot when I was trying to learn how2resort with my first Isla Paradiso world.

--DISCLAIMER: THESE METHODS REQUIRE EXPANSION PACKS I AM POSTING THESE IN CASE YOU HAVE THESE EXPANSION PACKS--

Now that's out of the way, lets get to business:

Into the future method:

Step 1. Wait until the portal spawns then inspect it, then DO NOT ACCEPT THE OPPORTUNITY! THE PORTAL WILL STILL WORK!

Step 2. Raise advanced technology skill to 10 (Lower or no skill will still work, but to decreased effect)

Step 3. Go to the city hall and check lotto records, do this until your sim gets the "Insider tips" moodlet.

Step 4. Go back to the present, go to the grocery store and spend ALL YOUR MONEY on lottery tickets.

Step 5. Profit up to 3 MILLION SIMOLEONS (Requires maxed advanced technology and biggest earning)

University life method:

(Ill make this one short and painless)

Go to university < Get level ten nerd influence < Become game designer < get to the top of that < Profit

Ill add more when I find legitimate ways to make :poop: loads of simoleons

You can definitely have your Sim earn enough to live on without getting a job, though not having Ambitions makes it a little more difficult. Things to do:

  • Write books. Be sure to look in your Skill journal and see which books you'll make the most money for writing - genres will have from 0 to 3 Simoleon signs by them to indicate how profitable that book will be for your Sim to write. This is slow at first, but it piles up eventually because royalty cheques come in over time in multiple payments.

  • Paint. At first your paintings will suck and only sell for small amounts. Later, once your Sim's skill is up (and if they have appropriate traits and Lifetime Rewards), they can sell for thousands. It takes a while to get there.

  • Garden. Your Sim can eat the produce rather than buy groceries, and sell the excess.

  • Collect rocks. If you see rocks laying around public lots, collect and sell them. Some might only be worth 14 simoleons; some might be worth 3,000 or so.

  • Fish. Again, your Sim can eat them and sell the excess -- and use them to fertilize the garden for better (and more valuable) harvests.

  • Play guitar. After getting to level 5 or 6, your Sim can go to crowded community lots and play for tips.
