Origin and Steam don't overlap and you can't mix hard copies with downloaded ones unfortunately.

lol thats not the problem of steam but the fault of EA they refuse to work with other platforms

just try to get a refund from steam and buy sims 3 from origin

As long as you're within two weeks and have less than 2 hours of playtime, you should be fine.

Alternatively, wait for the next major sale and get all the EP and SP on here. I bought the complete game for less than $150 so that's not bad considering how much content that is. I still haven't managed to get through ALL of it yet.

Whatever you purchased from Steam can be registered at thesims3.com and it will be added to your Origin games library. So if you purchased the base game on Steam and your EPs from Origin (mostly what I did), then registering the base game adds it to your Origin library where you can download and install it and all of the expasion packs in your Origin library (don't forget to patch - Origin does not distribute patched content).

Just grab the product keys from your Steam library and register them. You will not be able to mess with Steam achievements and that kind of thing because it isn't a Steam game, but you can certainly add a shortcut for a non-Steam game to your Steam library and launch from there and you'll still have most of the Steam overlay functionality. Alternatively, you can just launch and play from Origin if that floats your boat.

And one day Valve and EA will learn to play nicely and everything will be rainbows, unicorns and fluffy bunnies (like that's really gonna happen).

You need to "import" your Steam edition Sims 3 to GENERAL Sims 3. I said general because sims 3 other than bought from steam shared the same registry point. So yeah, it's steam that "messed up" here.

Read this guide, basically it's same thing: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=277022926

There is a something more in it. Just these days i solved. You dont need registration. If you buy copy on steam - you have it. And after that last month i wanna try play one of dlcs from boyfriends origin acount, so i instal his origin on my comp. Origin started using steam saves and mods instaled in steam folder. After while (some days) i find dlc useless and again start play on steam - its much more transparent and easier to run. But! steam cannot use origin saves! One way ticket (no registration in it). I decided to uninstall origin version and game began to threaten me, then i never can install it on my machine again! Threats - that something on me! Origin flew into the trash on third cosmic speed. But it was uninstall steam folders too! But nevermind - i reinstaled it again from steam library and everything is alright.
I reminding - all the time i have no need of registration at all.

And no importing needs too ofcourse. Origin starts using game instaled by steam automatically.
