I think it would be dumb , but they may decide to do something with it before they close. I have it and want to play the ♥♥♥♥ out of it but I don't want to get to involed just in case they kill. it. The life of a gamer sucks sometimes.
You could always just buy "DR2 Off the record", since the DLC for that game is handled by steam. So when GFWL goes (provided they don't patch it out by then) you should still be able to play with an offline profile and since the DLC is handled by steam you should be able to still access them.

Well, couple months back Capcom has announced they intend to remove GFWL from their games, including Dead Rising. They havn't announced the manner they intend to do it or the time frame yet, but that they will be removing it. So in theory you shouldn't need to worry. Now whether they do this smoothly and without ham fisted bugs that horribly F-up your game is a whole different thing, but I'm a pessimist when it comes to Capcoms decisions.

Hey! Thanks for your answers! :D Maybe I should tell you that I'm buying this with my brother in order to play cooperatively. I've got no interest in soloing this game, all I'm looking for here is a full coop campaign. So it would suck if by the death of GFWL we are left with no online modes at all D:

Also.... what's the difference between DR2 and Off The Record? They look pretty much the same
IIRC Off the record was an expansion that they later released as a standalone.

I can't believe this..... they cannot abandon costumers like this D:
If so, this is extremely bad pr for capcom.
I used to thought that once you buy a product, it's yours forever. It seems that's not the case with videogames though...
Hey guys! Look what I just found on the interwebz: some dude decided that it could be a good idea to email capcom customer support and ask them about this issue. And for everyones surprise, they actually responded.

Here is their response:

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Capcom!

As GFWL will be closing down, the client will be removed from games
and you will still be able to play your games.

Unfortunately we do not have any details yet of how this will be done and when.

Regards,

I know that Capcom leaves a lot to be desired, but I have to recognize that they've been behaving good with the pc gaming community.
I just hope they stick to their promise regarding GFWL.

The Joystiq article is more recent than that.

This. Capcom said it would be removed a few months ago, and now it seems they've backtracked on that stance for everything other than it's various Street Fighter IV releases. As of January 17 2014, they have "no plans".
I'd hold off buying Dead Rising 2, as it's unknown if Capcom will actually do anything about GFWL with it. This is because Dead Rising 2 is not installable without GFWL access - you can download it through Steam, but when you run it for the 1st time it has to connect to GFWL server's for a "verify version" check... without that connection you will not be able to play the game at all. So once GFWL server's go down, DR2 will be uninstallable.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is a different matter entirely. As you can install and play it without worrying about GFWL - when you install the game it will still install the GFWL client... but when you run the game it does not do any 'version verify' or similar... and you can go straight to creating a Local Profile - Local Profile is on your PC, so you can play 100% offline. So with being able to go straight to a Local Profile, it does not matter when GFWL shuts down as you'll still be able to play DR:OTR.

The differences between DR2 & DR:OTR is different main character. Basically it revolves around the same story (same area, same outbreak, etc) but taken from different character's point-of-view. It's also bringing back the original Dead Rising star, the original photo mechanics... and also lets you play sandbox mode to boost level's, gain monmey, etc. DR2:OTR is the superior game IMO.
I have the game in my inventory, so when they do take GFWL off will I not be able to play it, even if I have it installed?
So far as all of us no it will be playable. Better dl it now and play the stink out of it just in case. It realy is a great game.
