1. It's really hard to read the creatures names if the creatures has light fur. If the font color could be changed, that would be great!
2. I really like the new mutation menu! Plus I think it's a good challenge that once you set it, it can't be changed. It really makes you think 'Okay what is the most important thing here? Fixing those awful froggy feet or the blind eyes?'
3. I'm not sure how I feel about the new patterns/color yet. I kept remaking islands because I could not find, for the life of me, an Adam and Eve who I would consider decent looking(lmao sue me. I like playing with pretty creatures) But I might just get used to that with time.
4. I'm really liking that you have to unlock traits again. It's a good challenge.
5. I still do not like the textures. In my opinion, the previous ones were easier to look at and just plain prettier.
So far I'm Really liking this update! Good job guys!
Gameplay-wise, the game seems much more difficult now, perhaps in part due to the massive overhaul of mutations. I do NOT like the fact that the mutations are permanent, especially as you can't always tell what gene you're going to be selecting just by looking at the image. In other words, guess who thought she was selecting the nimble fingers and ended up with a creature whose babies have a 50% chance of getting a crippled paw? Setting the menu up so that you have to select for each creature is really nice, though. Makes setting up various lines within a tribe much simpler.

I think you should do your research ;)
Or do you plan to make the interspecies offspring with very low fertility? Of course they are your fantasy creatures and you can say: "Hey they are closely related and CAN breed" but then you should provide a bit of lore/story on how and why they are so close related.
Also you probably have heard of quantitative genes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygene). As far as I understand you use one gene (and different alleles of it) for one trait. Again, in reality this is in many cases more complicated and since you mention epigenetics as a planned feature I wonder how you will implement that since it is literally a whole new layer of complexity on top, but your gen for trait model is already quite simplified...
Don't get me wrong, I really like that there is a game here which covers this niche ;) I just fear you will miss your goals of "educational aspect" which would be unfortunate.
Good things: I love love love the new patterns! they give creatures such intense personalities the way I see it, and it makes naming them and distinguishing them a lot easier. at first when I saw the changes to the animals options (like picking berries and clearing grass) I was a little unsure but over the last hour of playing I've decided its perfectly fine and just took some time to adjust to. I'm very interested in the new "home island" immunity gene and what that's all about. The new mutation system is wonderful (except a few very minor things that don't even matter that much)
Problems/Bugs: The reason I stopped playing to post this was because my game crashed. everything was running very smoothly (I was playing on fastest quality) until I couldn't get the game to change over to night, I pressed space bar a few times and nothing happened so I clicked on the next day button and still nothing happened, finally the game froze up and crashed. Not at all a big deal unless it messes up my save file (when I play again in a little bit I'll update you on if this happened or not) Other than that no big bugs spotted by me yet
Picky little issues that don't matter, just wanted to comment on: at first I thought the runners leg was glitched because the icon for it looks so similar to the claw, I thought the game had bugged out and was just showing claw instead of runners leg. Also in the mutation menu blind eyes looks very similar to normal eyes, maybe tweak that a bit (make the whole eye white or something like that) And finally the fangs on creatures look a little off because they are the same as fur color, not white like actual fangs, It would be nice visually if they were white instead of fur color. Again, none of these are really big deals, just little tiny things that don't really make any difference to the game.
I'm admittedly not an expert on hybrids, but I think what happens in the game is entirely possible in the real world.
For example, wolves and coyotes. Wolves can and do occasionally eat coyotes, meaning they would have a 'predator' and 'prey' relationship as you put it. However, coywolves are a well documented hybrid that happen, albeit rarely, and they are usually fertile.
They are closely related. They are 'predator' and 'prey'. They can produce fertile offspring. That seems pretty similar to what happens in the game imo.
Relationships between species is usually a lot more complicated than just 'predator' and 'prey', and while species that prey on one another that can also interbreed are not the most common, they do happen. I think it's fine to have them in the game.
My game crashed as well on me, two times now. Nothing major happens but as I never had crashes before it is kind of distracting.
Otherwhise I don't have much to complain about (yet). I love the new patterns, they are great and everything I ever dreamed of (like literally dreamed lol). The new colours are also the best! The new mutation system is alright, I really liked the old one but the new one is just fine and I can play happily with it :3
The new travelling system could be a bit complicated and or frustrating especially for players who like a challenge right at the start of the game (I suggest having an option on which island to start (which has been previously suggested as well) as you explained on discord that this travelling system is especially for new players :) ) or for players who have planned for which island they are aiming and then want to go there immediatly.
Yes, wolf and coyote are closely related: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canis#Wolves.2C_dogs.2C_and_dingoes
They both are carnivores and are both predators.
But our cat/fox creature is an omnivore which suggests it is not so close to a pure carnivore. Also cats and foxes and wolves do not produce fertile offspring.
I also think it should be in game but should have some reasonable (and educational) explanation:
Are the Bearyenas also omnivore? Do they share a "recent" common ancestor? Do they have the same amount of chromosomes as our creatures (which is one of the critical aspects)?
Or first some mutations are needed to be genetically close to the Bearyenas? And the first hybridization to be successful (=fertile offspring) is very rare since the event of change in chromosome number (e.g. down syndrome) is very rare! (It could be something like a shiny pokemon^^)
I think it should be bound to certain conditions to heed the fact that hybridization with fertile offspring is not common at all! (Except the lore tells and the gameplay and their behaviour shows me they are closely related)
I haven't really explored the patterns so much yet, since both of my starting creatures had no pattern. But I did finally get the Mask gene out and it looks beautiful! If a bit pixely.
Wandering creatures don't seem to be spawning at all for me? At least they didn't spawn at all on the starter island. I'm a bit ways into the next island and I am still not seeing any.
I see the starter island only seemed to give me flower ports. But upon getting to the next island... I am only seeing flower ports there too? Is there supposed to be a mechanic where I am not able to tell the difference between which island I am supposed to land on next, or am I just spawning a bunch of flower ports by bad luck? If so, I can't say I'm happy about that. I really do need more choice with how I can play at the beginning, I think, especially if I'm going to test these new things on these islands.
Is the normal snout supposed to be an unfinished asset? The nose isn't really defined on it, as opposed to the big snout. Also I can't help but notice that the venomous fangs are colored in... which is a shame. I prefer the more natural look of having them white, but it could be that they are also unfinished.
Sorry if it seems like I am nitpicking! But I hope it helps somewhat nonetheless.
Coyotes are omnivores.

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/c/coyote/
http://animals.mom.me/coyotes-diet-1632.html (psst this one has some really good references at the bottom of the article if you wanna get sciency about it!)
Sure, they can hunt, and they are predators of things like mice and rabbits. However, a substantial part of their diet is not made up of meat, but instead of things like berries(Just like nichelings!). Calling animals such as coyotes 'predators' is an extremely simplified way to look at it(it also kinda remind me of zootopia tbh). Coyotes are prey to animals such as wolves, and a coyote pup is prey to even more animals. The relationships between species are complex. Trying to simplify down into neat little boxes is hard and often cuts out important links between species.
Also I'm not sure what you are trying to suggest by saying that "cats and foxes and wolves do not produce fertile offspring". Nichelings(and bearyenas despite their name) are not real animals. They aren't "cats and foxes and wolves". They are made up animals that happen to be closely related enough to produce fertile offspring.
I'm just using the coyote and wolf example because it closely mimics the bearyena and nicheling relationship. Aka- Two closely related animals(most likely in the same genus) where one tends to prey on the other, but can produce fertile offspring.
Bugs I've found:
Screen starts flickering intensly. Fix: restart your computer.
When restarting due to the "Dead light bug (the flickering screen bug), it is possible you can lose all your niche data, resulting in a reinstall. I'm going to wait until this is fixed. Nice horror game though (I'm milking the balls out of the flickering bug so I'm gonna stop typing.)
Body and snout slots don't show what stats they give on gene list
