Yup! If you want to get better or if you want to challenge yourself, then you have to try out Competitive TF2 because that's where all the best players are at. This thread is awesome, it has all the info you need. I wish I had something like this when I first started.

It allows people to actually get some experience. Jumping right into lobbies sadly will misrepresent the communities with all the trolls and people who just yell rather than help. Hopefully the TF2 community makes a better lobby system that is actually moderated.

I was thinking exactly what gummybear was thinking, but I thought "wth I might as well" ,joined the na6v6 newbie mix group, downloaded mumble, and had a great time :) the coaches are really friendly, all you need is basic knowledge of some of the common maps, and a cheap microphone.

I've been thinking I could probably try out (and do well in) competitive play in shooters for years, but 4 things prevent me from doing so, none of which will change anytime soon:

1. Unpredictable schedule because of IRL always getting in the way.
2. A ping that's too high to connect to anyplace very far away from where I live.
3. An old computer that occasionally crashes midgame.
4. I like the anonymity of the internet.

#1 and #2 can't be fixed unless I give up IRL and move many miles from where I live, and #3 can't be fixed because I'm not one of those stinking rich kids that can endlessly dip into their parent's wallets whevever he wants something that eventually will prove to be completely pointless. #4 is personal preference and every competitive scene I've ever looked at requires that you reveal at least some of your personal information in order to enter.

You don't need to commit unless you actually join a league, its still fun just to play in newbie mixes.

I'm with ErenJay. If you want to play casually, just with better players, you can always join up pug groups and newbie mixes. At least it offers a challenge in a non-committed environment. Check it out if you have time. :)

You'll get much better if you consistently play against better players :) I'm glad you're checking out tf2lobby.

I've done some research on tf2lobby, and it seems that if someone has as high as a 10% disconnect rate, then they will be kicked from most matches before they even begin.

tf2lobby is NOT for me then. Any other options?

If you're interested in 6v6 but don't want to play TF2Lobby, try out the NA 6v6 Newbie Mix Group! They play pick up games on a semi regular basis every weekend or so where each team gets a mentor that has considerable 6v6 experience. It's the mentor's job to coach you and everyone else on your team on how to play whatever it is you're playing, teach any strategies for specific maps, and answer any question you might have. They're always a blast, and everyone always walks away with not only a greater understanding of 6v6 and a desire to come back for more!

Weekends only... Half the time my weekends are even worse than my weekdays. Also, I'd rather try out the Highlander style game than the 6v6. 4 out of 9 classes doesn't seem like tf2 anymore when I look at it. I guess I should have said that before. Also, I know this is a thread for advertising and such, but you kind of overdid it when you added the exclamation point at the end.

It's funny, where I am. Frustrated by the average pub, but also unable to pug. In order for something to work for me I would have to be able to drop in and out at any time, sometimes with no warning whatsoever.
