Can you start any of your other games? Try L4D2 to see if it starts.

OK, first quit steam and restart it to see if that fixes the problem.

I've got the same problem. Black screen, mouse cursor, and sound, but that's all. Restarted Steam 5 times, same deal. Anybody have a clue? Ubuntu Linux.
