buying stuff
I'm new to tf2, Iand I was wondering what you buy stuff with, do you use your real money or is there some kind of currency in game I've missed?

Do you mean buying from the store or trading with other players? If you're buying from the store you use steam wallet cash which you can add from a debit card, paypal, etc. If you're trading with other players you'll use weapons, metal, or keys as currency for the most part.

as the Last Templar said, if you want an item you have 2 options

you can either buy it from the store with real cash or trade with another player that has that item, players usually use metal as currency
