what controller does "partial controller support" use

I believe Xbox is the prefered controller concidering most of the games I've played only work with that controller or have Xbox's button layout. I have a Generic PC controller and so far it's only worked on Sonic Generations. I have a feeling I'm going to have to buy one.

i got a batman arkham city collecters edition ps3 controller for christmas but it has an xbox layout and connects through a usb, and if it does work what are the controls?
