I check for Spies all the time. Even if I am a different class I still shoot at suspicious characters and sometimes I get lucky.
I'm actually woried that people are neglecting Medics.
Maybe that one game had a bunch of non-spy checking morons. What is worse is that the #1 person on the other team was a spy but no one was actively spy checking. I cut his point growth down as a pyro but 1 pyro can only do so much.
And for when I play pyro (Which isn't often), I don't spy check unless I see the spy directly and try to chase him down, but if I see a spy in any class, I use the Spy! voice command.
People don't often communicate unless you're playing on a specific server. It's always been like that. I've hardly seen people telling their team where the spies are located even before the Uber Update.
Because they are F2P, they even walk like spy and got to waste time spy check every one of them.
If you ACT like a spy, as in running stright at an engie nest disguised, trying to avoid touching teamates or coming from the enemy's direction, anyone with a eyes will get suspicious and come after you.
I see people spycheck all the time, but that's probably just because almost every server I go on, even non-valve servers, has at least 3 spies per team, so evryone checks everywhere to ensure the engies are safe. Not all of the spies are F2P either, just idiots that refuse to be team players and switch classes, despite having like 5 snipers or 4 spies.
And if no one else is warning people of spies, then why don't you warn them? Use a mic or text chat and tell people that a spy is in play. Just because no one else is talking doesn't mean you shouldn't.
