Display Drivers crash on Surface Pro 4 at monk world!
Absolutely great game, and I've been waiting for it for 3 years now... but I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it :(

I got to the monk world, and got on a boat to go to the next screen, and instead of a beautiful new area, I ended up getting a 'Display Drivers have stopped working and recovered' message! I can hear the music and environmental sounds, and I can still interact with the screen which is stuck on the loading 'S' icon, but I can't see the area at all!

Up until now Samorost 3 had been working beautifully with the touch and hdpi screen of my Surface Pro 4 i5. I really don't think this is Amanita's fault at all, but does anyone have any pointers for me on how to get this working so I don't have to abandon this amazing game?

Does anyone else have a Surface and didn't have problems with this?

I still have that problem on one of my machines - my friend cannot finnish the game due to that. More here:

Really nasty workaround:

Uninstall your display adapter drivers in your device manager until you're using the default microsoft drivers... then play Samorost 3. Your framerate will be horrid and the game will be pretty unresponsive but you might be able to get through the area and then continue playing on the other side... :(

I'm just going to wait for a solution...

+1

Have surface pro 4.
Game crashes after getting in the boat with the monk and moving to next screen.
Well, the game doesn't completely crash. There is still sound, and even the cursor (if I reload), but a blank screen. A real bummer!!!

I would love to hear from someone who has managed to find a a decent fix/workaround to this.

What I found out when I switched to NVidia card is that once you pass the screen after monk land (on the boat) it doesn't crash intel drivers anymore when you come back there. So maybe switching microsoft vga driver (no HW acceleration) and going to that screen, then exitting the game and installing intel driver back might help. However, I did not test this.

I tried simply disabling the Intel driver to try and fix but with no success. The game gets stuck on the load screen if you do that.

Is this a problem restricted to surface pro 4 owners? The other people solving the problem own laptops/comps with an NVidia card as well as the Intel.

I also found the Samorost3.exe file, looked at properties, and tried changing some of the compatibility settings. No luck.

Plan B is to install it on my old clunker laptop.

Like I said, you can play it by uninstalling your display drivers and reverting to the default display drivers, but the framerate is awful.

As I said in my post - once you step on that crashing screen with a non-crashing driver - you can then (probably) switch to the crashing (intel) driver and it might not crash again.

My scenario was:

1) Force NVidida Titan X to be used for Samorost
2) Finished the game
3) Switched back to intel card and wanted to reproduce the crash (monk and big animal screen)
4) It did not crash again

In other words - it crashes Intel drivers only during the first entrance to that screen

I would like to help you with it, but we have no info except that the driver has a problem, which is not enough. I also don't have any Surface Pro and unfortunately don't know anybody nearby who has it.

Also the GPU which has a problem is dedicated NVidia or integrated Intel? I would recommend using the dedicated GPU as it makes big difference over just integrated one.

Is some of mentioned possible fixes (for Fallout 4) working? https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/3so0uu/updates_nvidia_graphics_driver_stopped/

Yes the problem is Surface Pro 4 only has the Intel chip and no other GPU. The fallout fixes probably won't help as they were NVIDIA issues. It's a real bummer because Sam3 is AMAZING on the Surface Pro. Just crazy beautiful.

I will try Hammerheart's suggestion of rolling back the driver when I get the chance.

Thanks for help everyone.

:(

unfortunately, the patch has not fixed the issue on SP4.

I have a laptop with Intel and nVidia graphics. When I went to Manage 3D settings in the nVidia control panel and selected the nVidia processor instead of AutoSelect for preferred graphics processor, I got past the glitch. Hope that helps.

Intel just updated the Surface Pro drivers but unfortunately I still can't get past this scene. :(
