I have a feeling that the designers liked this "a poor first encounter could cost you the game" element, though, because they mentioned it right in the play tips you can read before each mission and they included gameplay elements such as making your altar (the place where you make your last stand) an incredibly weak source of mana.
Easy; Sacrifice was released just when the era of the console dominance of gaming was beginning. The 32-bit era of consoles brought along casual gamers, loads and loads of them. The pressure was on game developers to make games that could easily be learned through 5 minutes of tutorials and no need to read a manual. And so, games like Sacrifice died a slow ignominious death, unable to deliver the profits the ones controlling the money demanded (everyone wanted their game to sell like Final Fantasy 7). Not many want to deal with at-times-finicky PCs anymore, and very few people controlling the money want to help bankroll less-than-surefire titles, or help them get the advertising they need.
Go look at an older game like Age of Empires 2. That game had an enormous manual and took time to learn. Very few gamers have the necessary patience anymore.
